IE 662: Class Exercise

Due 11/13/2003

Written report: 1 page max

Read Grudin's article "The case against user-interface consistency", a well-respected article arguing against slavish adherence to consistency in designing user interfaces.

Critique the conclusions of this article by writing a summary of perhaps one paragraph, not to exceed one page in length. See if you can argue possible errors in logic or example -- or argument against his conclusions from evidence or practical considerations.

You may agree with the article -- you do not have to disagree with its thesis to complete this assignment. However, I would like you to come up with at least one objection or observation on limitations to his argument.

In addition to a one-paragraph summary, be prepared to discuss in class.
